Choose Paper - Save the Environment

What do you say when confronted by someone convinced that online billing statements will save the environment from the damage done by the traditional paper statements we send through the mail?

We as consumers can challenge some of the inaccurate statements that are being represented as fact.

Statement: Register Online and Save Trees
You make choices all the time. Here’s an easy one with a big impact. Make a statement by registering for e-statements. When you do, you’ll help the environment by saving trees. What’s in it for you? You’ll have access to up-to-date account information online, receive monthly statement e-mail reminders, and save postage by making your payments online.

Response: Not Using Paper Will Not Save Trees

The fact is, by using paper, you will be encouraging the growth of forests. More trees will be planted and harvested to provide renewable and reusable paper. Once you hit the send button on your PC and “burned the electrons” to send this email to me, the environment will be forever marked by the emissions from the power plants needed to produce the electrons to power the internet, not to mention the landfills that will eventually hold hardware and other e-waste — as seen on 60 Minutes.

Paper on the other hand is made from trees. Trees can be planted and harvested in a never ending cycle that enhances the earth, creates a natural sink for the carbon dioxide generated to provide electronic communications and serves as a true sustainable economic engine across the world.

I am not advocating that we cease electronic messages. We have also moved many of our processes on-line to increase efficiencies, but we are under no illusion that our electronic process is somehow better for the environment than using paper. Not using paper will not save trees or the environment. In actuality, it will force family forest owners and other private landowners to use their land in other ways to generate income, which in many cases means permanently harvesting the trees with no plans to replant.

The point is - think critically, and make your own decisions regarding what is truly a “Greener” choice. Please, PRINT this message and share it with others. You will be protecting forestlands.

View Video: The Power of Print

Everyone tells me that print is a dying industry. Print can’t possibly survive when stacked up against the internet right? WRONG! Consider this; radio, television, beta-max, vhs, personal computers, cds, and dvds were all touted as industry killing technologies. Yet, print is still here. The Printing Industry is just one piece of the Graphic Communications pie. Print is a dynamic and forever evolving form of media that still holds a relevant place in any communications or marketing strategy.

The magazine industry was one sector that was supposed to abandon print in favor of online delivery. So what has happened? Consider the facts:

Magazine readership has grown over the past five years. (Source: MRI)

Average paid subscriptions reached nearly 300 million in 2009. (Source: MPA estimates based on ABC first and second half 2009 data)

4 out of 5 adults read magazines. (Source: MRI)
Magazines deliver more ad impressions than TV or Web in half-hour period. (Source: McPheters & Company)

Magazine readership in the 18 to 34 segment is growing. (Source: MRI)

Since Facebook was founded, magazines gained more than one million young adult readers. (Source: MRI)

The average reader spends 43 minutes reading each issue. (Source: MRI)

Magazines are the No. 1 medium of engagement – across all dimensions measured. Simmons’

Multi-Media Engagement Study find magazines continue to score significantly higher than TV or the Internet in ad receptivity and all of the other engagement dimensions, including “trustworthy” and “inspirational.” (Source: Simmons Multi-Media Engagement Study)

Magazines and magazine ads garner the most attention: BIGresearch studies show that when consumers read magazines they are much less likely to engage with other media or to take part in non-media activities compared to the users of TV, radio or the Internet. (Source: BIGresearch Simultaneous Media Usage Study)

Magazines outperform other media in driving positive shifts in purchase consideration/intent. (Source: Dynamic Logic)

Magazines rank No. 1 at influencing consumers to start a search online – higher than newer media options.(Source: BIGresearch Simultaneous Media Usage Study)

Let the record show, print is definitely NOT being killed by the internet. You can even argue that some areas of print are thriving thanks in part to the internet. Truth be told, print and digital are not competing forms of media…they are complementary. The best way to communicate any message is an all inclusive-cross media approach.

An extensive recycling program, a variety of energy reduction control systems and a concerted effort to use recycled paper are a just a few of the reasons why Casey Printing continues to be recognized by the County Of Monterey as a responsible green business.

In August, 2008 Casey Printing became the first business in southern Monterey County to be certified “Green” by the Monterey Bay Area Green Business program. As a part of this certification, program auditors followed a strict set of criteria, closely examining all production and business practices.

On February 23, 2010, the Monterey County Board of Supervisors, in a special presentation at County Government Center, recognized certified members of the Green Business Program for their ongoing efforts to operate in an environmentally responsible manner. Chairman of the Board, Supervisor Simon Salinas, said this about the occasion: “The Board of Supervisors is proud of the voluntary nature of this program. We are happy to see that Casey Printing is committed to both sustainability and profitability. They are a great example of the kind of green business our county wants and needs.”

That, coupled with the ongoing recession, results in some very hungry folks. Using the Super Bowl as a rallying point to focus on hunger, Casey Printing, along with thousands of youth organizations, businesses and churches all over the nation, participated in the Souper Bowl of Caring project. This incredibly helpful and meaningful event encourages people to donate soup or other non-perishable food items to their local food pantry around the time of the Super Bowl.

Now that we are sure this internet thing is not just a passing fad, we are setting our pet rocks aside and focusing on increasing our services. While print remains the single, most effective way to drive your message to a reader, when coupled with the dynamics of the internet, it enhances the power of the message. A survey conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Earthtone suggests that most people choose how they consume media based on personal preferences.

Research shows that the majority of adults in the U.S. think that printed media are easier to read than the digital equivalent. Interestingly, most adults reported that they feel more comfortable when they have something on paper than when it’s on screen, suggesting that we make an instinctive association between things we can touch and feel and things that are “real.” At the same time, many adults also showed a preference for the immediacy that digital media offers. We value real time information from around the world, finding the music we love in seconds, and the low cost of Web-based communications.

Recently adding website design, email marketing products and digital editions of print publications, we are offering a more comprehensive solution for publishers. “Our job is to help our customers get their message into the minds of their readers,” explained Rich Casey, while describing the company’s strategies to offer more ways to deliver information. In light of this, Casey continues to develop services to multiply the power of print. If you are interested in enhancing and expanding the reach of your printed message, please contact us at sales@caseyprinting.com.
According to Plant Engineer, Fidencio “Fifi” Diaz, the new system will provide the plant with very high quality, clean & dry, compressed air while using 40% less energy than the older technology compressor system it replaced.

Other “Green” benefits of the new system are the particulate filters and waters traps that are “closed loop” so that zero oil emissions are let into the environment. In addition, along with the new compressor system, a new high tech air dryer was installed that requires less than half the energy of a typical air dryer system.

“All in all it is a great win -win system for the plant” said Bill Casey. “We get better air quality for the machines, at a lower cost, with no emissions and an overall reduction of our environmental impact”.

Casey Printing placed it’s order for a new energy efficient air compression system. Working with PG&E consultants and a private contractor, an energy audit was performed on the electrical consumption and efficiency of Casey’s current air compressors. Once the audit was completed, a plan was developed to improve the efficiency of the system, which includes a new variable drive screw type compressor, new filtration systems and a new air dryer.

Once installed, the system will save about 80,000 Kilowatt hours of electricity per year, which is enough power to run more than 12 homes, based upon PG&E typical residential home usage data.

“Now this is what I call green” said plant manager Bill Casey. This kind of reduction in electricity usage is measurable, saves costs, and has positive environmental impacts. A real win-win situation”.

“Stop the presses!” (or something along those lines) suggested Candace Amadei, veteran Casey Printing account executive. It was New Year’s Eve and Candace was trying to process an order for a large direct mail project for her customer. After reviewing the specifications, Candace and the Casey mailing manager had suspicions that they may be able to save the customer some serious money but needed to get some questions answered first.

There was critical information missing in regard to the most efficient way to produce and mail the project. The Post Office had the answers, but key personnel were not available. Going out on a limb, the Casey team counseled the customer to delay production until they could resolve the issues. The customer, while under pressure to get the project printed and mailed, trusted the Casey team and agreed to delay production until after the New Year holiday, when all the questions could be answered.

The result: Casey got the answers, changed the format of the piece, performed some additional bindery functions and added some tabbing in the mail prep process. Consequently, they slashed mailing costs, reduced delivery charges, mitigated sales tax implications and saved the customer more than $14,000.00!

Are you looking to get more bang for your print marketing buck? Perhaps there is a way Casey can reduce the cost to reach your customer too? Please give us an opportunity to offer a proposal on your next project.
